Original painting by Helen Johnson
Oil and mixed media painting on canvas, including single use plastic, gold leaf and household paint.
72 x 48 inch
This painting is inspired by a walk along the South Tyne river near Alston in the North Pennines, where I live.
It is an area where river and land are constantly fighting with each other and transforming the landscape, so that there is never the same view and daily evidence of the power of nature.
The painting is made of a combination of media, including gold leaf alongside peat from the area. I often use gold leaf in my work, and in this painting it is used to emphasise the beauty and majesty of the landscape.
It is part of a series of paintings painted during lockdown in the winter of 2020/ 2021.
