Garden painting of Cumbria| Helen Alice Johnson Artist | | Sunlight shining through the trees

Grandpa’s Chair. Oil and pastel on canvas. 50cm x 50cm

‘Grandpa’s Chair.’ Oil on canvas. 2022.

“You have captured our garden beautifully and given us a perfect memory of our house and the special memories we have with my Grandpa over lockdown. Thank you - we absolutely love it!”

When working on a commission I spend as much time with you as you can give, and as much time in your garden as possible. Its really important to me that your painting reflects not just the physical aspects of the garden, but the emotions and memories that your garden evokes. I enjoy hearing stories and capturing the essence of what your garden is about.

In this particular painting, the collector was moving and wanted a memory of their garden that they could take with them. During lockdown, their grandparents had been to stay for a long period, and during that particularly hot springtime of 2020, ‘Grandpa’ sat on the garden chair and watched them as they gardened in the sunshine.

Hens wander elusively around this garden, and you can just glimpse one under the tree on the right hand side of the painting.

‘The Bermingham Triptych’ Oil on canvas. 2022

‘Helen was a joy to work with.  She spent a long time with us trying to get a feel for what we wanted from the paintings, and making preliminary sketches in the garden.  She kept us up to speed at every stage to make sure we were happy with the way the paintings were developing, and was very happy to make some last minute tweaks.  The finished triptych looks fantastic and has really captured the feel of the house, gardens and even our pets!’
