This painting is one of four, inspired by the church in Kirkhaugh, just outside Alston in Cumbria. The others in the series are Wings, Blue Wings and beyond. I am interested in the space inbetween the ground and the sky. When children paint a landscape, they often leave a large space in between, and I am exploring this as a concept. I have always been interested in pattern and the connection between pattern and nature, as well as pattern and the divine. The church in Kirkhaugh is called the Church of the Holy Paraclete, and there are several references to doves within it and its windows. The way the pattern in my painting created 'wings' was an accidental find, but one worth celebrating!
