This painting is the first of 2024, where I am exploring the concept of the space in between. I am interested in the relationship between people and nature, and for this year, what lies between these two corporeal entities. When a child paints a landscape, often they paint the grass below and the sky above, and a vast emptiness in between. What do children know that we have forgotten? What lies in this space in between? A space where the corporeal and the spiritual meet in an explosive world of colour, pattern and imagination. I am also interested in how this space is pierced and power is sourced from above it - whether that be a celestial power of a church steeple or wind power from a turbine. This particular painting is inspired by the Church of the Paraclete in Kirkhaugh, Cumbria. The church is the only one of its kind, with a unique 'fleche' spire meaning 'arrow'. A spire that is literally piercing through the space in between.
